US Other Visas Information

USA >> Other Visas

A lawful permanent resident is a foreign national who has been granted the privilege of permanently living and working in the United States. A Lawful Permanent Resident is commonly known as a "Green Card Holder". If you are a citizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident in the United States, you can apply for a relative to become a lawful permanent resident. You must go through a multi-step process; this process is often referred as "Immigration Visa Application" or "Green Card Application":

  • You must file an immigrant visa petition for your relative, and it must be approved by US government agency.
  • The Department of State must determine if an immigrant visa number is immediately available to your relative, the foreign national, even if she or he is already in the United States. When an immigrant visa number becomes immediately available to your relative, it means that she or he can apply to have one of the immigrant visa numbers assigned to her or him.
  • If your relative is already in the United States, she or he may apply to change her or his status to that of a lawful permanent resident after a visa number becomes available. This is one way your relative can apply to secure an immigrant visa number. If your relative is outside the United States when an immigrant visa number becomes available, your relative must then go to the U.S. consulate servicing the area to complete the processing. This is the other way in which your relative can apply to secure an immigrant visa number.

Immigration Eligibility Information
To be eligible to sponsor a relative (spouse, parents, children, siblings) to immigrate to the United States you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and be able to provide documentation proving your status.
  • You must prove that you can support your relative at 125% above the mandated poverty line.
  • If you are a US Citizen, you may petition for the following foreign national relatives to immigrate to the United States; however you must be able to provide proof of the relationships:
    1. Husband or wife;
    2. Unmarried child under 21 years old;
    3. Unmarried son or daughter over 21;
    4. Married son or daughter of any age;
    5. Brother or sister if you are at least 21 years old; or
    6. Parent if you are at least 21 years old.
  • If you are a lawful permanent resident, you may petition for the following foreign national relatives to immigrate to the United States; however you must be able to provide proof of the relationships:
    1. Husband or wife; or
    2. Unmarried son or daughter of any age

It may be an important decision you made in your life to apply for a U.S. Lawful Permanent Residence for your family members. As a U.S. permanent resident, your family member can enjoy all the rights and privileges that are part of their permanent residency, and they need to accept all of the responsibilities of being a U.S. permanent resident as well.
Due to the crucial nature of immigration application, the whole process of applying for a Green Card can be very lengthened and confusing. We strongly suggest you choose good application guides to complete the process. Our do-it-yourself application packages for permanent residence is focused on providing you an easy-to-use, step-by-step guidance to file your application to the related government agencies.
